hmm a sterile system vs a natural system its apples and oranges. i prefer the natural system the only problem with hitchhikers is the aquarist. if you dont rush to set up a system you should have plenty of time to eradicate most of the (pests)?????? before you finish out the tanks coral and fish populations plan it out then plan some more. just how long does it take the average aquarium to reach a point when you feel its finished (6years ) i just recently added my last fish to my 180 gal soft coral tank nothing good happens quickly in this hobby. after six years i feel my tank has reached a balance and yes i have aptasia hence the final addition to the tank and the copperband is doing his job with gusto

photo # 2 possibly diploasterea pg 107 coral quick reference guide by julian sprung or possibly favia pg 109 or leptastrea pg 91

xenia is a climber!!!!! train on to back glass it will allways grow toward the light and is easy to remove that way. to slow its growth add more soft coral like colt corals. finger leathers etc... xenias a fast grower trimm aggresively with pruning and competition for trace elements it should slow it down. warning this things growth seems directly related to iodide supplementation if you dose that may be why its growing out of controll this coral is found growing at the outflow pipes for raw sewage so it prefers a nutrient rich tank .cut back on planktonic foods

This:
looks like colt coral. I had gotten some RCA, and it grow pretty fast. It also self-propogates, and I have about 5 little pieces attaching themselves around my tank.
capnella imbricata - (kap-NEL-luh) (kenya tree coral) very similar to nephthea (capnella) has a rough texture like sand paper nephthea is slippery . pg 173(corals a quick referenceguide by julian sprung (east africa to the western pacific) wait a month and you will have more then you want very hardy coral ships poorly though maybe a supplier issue because i cant seem to stop mine from spreading

Lights are less than 3 months old. I've been getting DI water from RCA. I have a Tunze Nano Wavebox, 1 Koralia 3 (850 GPH) and a magdrive 700 (700 GPH) on the return.
mag 7 on a 90gal seems small mag 9 would be better ? phosphates? silicates? ultra life red slime remover works well siphon off slime first.

hey denna ive had my three pajama cardinals for 5years. odd numbers be the trick males tend to be slightly larger in both species and they do indeed have diffrent jaw lines but not to worry they can tell the diffrence and when they know you will definently know they are ambush predator and have the speed to prove you will fail with your net only stress it out and damage its fins (come on pepole throw out those filthy fin killin nets spend 30 bucks buy a fish trap) oh sorry about the rant one of my litttle quirks the net is allways my last option. if your not overly fond of them you could exchange them for 3 or 5 babies start over .or just by a baby and hope for the best the second female will spread out the aggression

carbon dust is very high in phosphates so rinse throughly to prevent phosphate driven algae blooms cyno ect..

you can easily under estimate the feeding requrments of the hemit crab there like little gangsters they run in packs and will actively hunt inverts and the occasional wrasse with a true pack mentallity. under fed they will eventually turn on themselves 5 hermitts in 65 gal tank seems a little much. I have only one in my 180 gal i prefer to use black brittle stars and serpent strars they clean up better and are more invert friendly
-
ive had these in my 180 for about 3 yrs they are in fact nonphotosynthetic they are not mango or aptasia in that time they have not spread i started with about three of them witch i discovered whlie doing maintenance not one has ever sought to be in the light quite the oppisite they inhabit my internal reef structure i can count about 9 now there a very intresting additon to my night time viewing mine have a yellow base with white and clear tentacles with arcospheres on the end i believe its a deepwater corallimorpharian( pseudocorynactis cabovredensis) if i had to guess but a close up would help

I plan on going the mud route myself and am even getting the mud from the same place.
My understanding is that you can develope a anoxic environment with a lot less depth so get much better nitrate reduction. Heck, the entire "miracle mud" line is based on the principle.
dont get flatworms or red bugs while using mud youll never get rid of them till you change out your mud

so are you having a problem blowing the breaker on the room the tank is in?
not blowing the breakers yet but cant expand my system with out more power. I need to add coral frag grow out and a refugium but im near my max .I was hpoing some one on ARC knew a electrican willing to trade labor for labor or labor for coral ect........... I need more power because i dont think the wife will let my hobby spill out into another room. And i need power to my fresh water holding tank.

i have had this tank for 1yr and on one of my rocks i have about 10 things on it growing they look like anenomes but they are clear with white tips and they only come out at night what are they my camera not good enuff to take pic
need more info if you want a clear answer maybe filter feeder (coral hmm maybe a worm) how many tenticals ect....
many things only come out to feed at night
-
thought i would chime in . Holes in far right chamber are for overflow just in case the refugium section clogs some people will put floss or sponge there just past the refugium witch can lead to clogging. and your right that refugium is way to small. lol but you have to work with what you got!!
