  1. Question for people that have controlers.

I am setting up a 50g reef tank (it's my first saltwater) Would it be advisable for me to get a controler like the Apex Jr and then add on to it as my tank grows or should I just go ahead and get a model with more features...keep in mind I am new at saltwater so explain or list the basic things it will need to do for my tank please. I am going to run a 30g sump. Lighting if it matters will be LED

I know you dont have to have them but since I am new at saltwater I would rather set it up so I have less heartache from problems later.

  2. I want to set a reef tank up. I am on a budget so this will be a slow build. I would rather pay a little more now than get to a point in a year and need to buy better parts. The tank will be in the corner of a room.

My goal is to have a tank that doesn't need a lot of maintenance and is healthy.

I have two tanks...one is an old oceanic 50g with the corner drilled and an over flow set up the other is a 38G Jebo R375

So I am looking for help or direction with which to set up.

    Option 1:

Set up the 38g as is. The tank is not drilled so a sump is not an option in the future.

I have almost everything I need for this set up.

    Option 2

Set up the 50G and use the 38 as a sump. I have to work on lights but still have most of what I need.

Tell me which you think will be better and why please.

  3. I just was given a 38g reef tank skelton, It has not been used for about 3 years. The tank had sand and old coral and live rock in it. I have a couple of questions that I was not able to find answers to.

Can I reuse the old sand, coral, and rocks?

The sand is a corser variety, it there any benefit to using a finer sand?

Can I use the chemicals, food and other items that came witht the tank.

Should I clean everything with something other than water and a scrub sponge?

Thanks for the help, Ill post pics of the build once it starts.

    Ted

  4. Does anyone have a link to the fish(invertibrates..coral..anything) I can find off the coast? Or at least what is safe to bring back and add to my tank? I didnt realize there would be so many options till I say the post of what some had brought back. I have tried googling Texas salt water fish but I keep getting the one you eat not what can be put in a reef tank. This is more than likely because i'm new to this.

This site is great by the way ...thanks for the help

  5. Quick querstion:

I am starting a reef tank and I was wondering if it is ok to catch shrimp in the ocean and transport them to my tank?

I live in Austin as was thinking about the summer vacation at the beach. So say a 4-5 hour drive....easy to set up a bubbler for the ride home but has anyone here tried this an did you have any problems?

I am guessing it would be mostly shrimp maybe a few other things if i catch something interesting in a throw net.

The beach for reference would be anywhere from Galvaston to Corpus Cristi....not sure where yet

  6. Thanks both of you..... I am reading and learnig a lot, but being a visual person charts and images help a lot. I hope to have the tank up and running in a week or two....so I have awhile before I get the fish.

  7. Does anyone have a book or better yet web link that shows groupings of fish and coral that will live realitavely well together? One that has pictures would be great since I am learning about the differences and the options that are out there. I am new to salt water and want to set up a 55g tank. I would like this to be a mix of coral and fish. I plan to build an LED light source from plans online so ill have to get corals that are low light to start with and then modify as I learn, possible upgrading the lights as I go. My tank is drilled on one side with a single hole so I plan on using a 20/30 gallon tall below as a sump. I am not in a rush to complete the tank and want my 6 yr old to take part in its growth, so this will also help him understand what can go in the tank as well.

    Thanks for the help

  8. I am new to salt water so forgive the lack of knoweldge.

I am starting to build a Reef Tank. ( no water in the tank yet)

Can i get live sand from a beach? If so is this more or less healthy than other options?

Does anyoone know of a site that has pictures if saltwater set ups with the filtration systems? I am looking for soething that describes the differences, both pros and cons......ie cost difficulty etc.

what would be great is if they had severla different types of common set ups and then gave a summery of the benifits of each.

I like the tanks that are full of invertibrates and corals plus fish, as well as the little bugs/worms This is what I want to build.

I am also making my stand since i cant find one I like. So any susgestions in this area are welcom.
