If you pull out what you can grab on to, and keep up with your water changes, they WILL do the job.

I have a customer who had a forest of hair algae in her 120 gallon, and the "people" who were maintaining it before me told her it was just part of saltwater tanks.. I pulled out soccerball size amounts of it for 2 months, added 20 mexican turbos, and did frequent water changes, and there is absolutely no hair algae in her tank now. If only I could find something to eat her anthelia now...

We all do need to remember that collection should be done responsibly, and it does need to be monitored and controlled, but a ban would be a huge hit on the hobby. Tongan liverock is something we can do without... Yellow Tangs and Flame Angels are not

I've put about a dozen of them together... they're fine, just be careful with the screws if you buy one in a box. They're cheap junk screws and will strip really easily. If I bought the Solana stand, I'd take the entire hardware package they send up to Home Depot or Lowe's and swap everything you can with quality stuff.

How deep is the water in your skimmer chamber?

I would get 7... any that die off will still leave you with a nice group. Get the ones that have been at the LFS for a week or more if possible. They can have a high mortality rate when first shipped in.

These guys ship poorly, and I expect that it's from collection methods. They school in HUGE groups and are not treated by collectors the same way, say a crosshatch trigger would be.

I like groups of 5+... gives you that reef fish, schooling look without taking up a whole lot of bio load. It's a 70 gallon, right?

Bulbs are less than 3 mopnths old.

Then I'd bet there's some flow issues going on... try redirecting one of your koralias towards the biggest trouble spots, and consider the conchs...

Were you still thinking about adding more powerheads?

Should be no problem having clams in with the horses, just make sure you are able to meet the clam's light and food requirements, in addition to all the things the horses need.

I think the ORA horses usually retail somewhere around $80 for the yellows, more for the orange guys, but every now and then they would have blow outs and they'd retail for less.

Make SURE they are eating before you take them home though. If they don't eat at the store, chances are they wont eat for you... especially if you are going to have a mandarin in there who will deplete the pod population pretty quickly. I cycled my horse tank for 4 months before I put any fish in. I just concentrated on the corals, and once some nice Reidis came in that were eating frozen mysis, I added them.

I always fed my guys 3 times a day, and did two 10% water changes every week. Worked well for me.

Conch snails work well too.. that coupled with increased flow to the problem areas is usually enough to knock it out without chemical supplementation.

I would ask about your phosphates, but I tested them when I was over there and they (and the nitrates) were at zero, so I know you're good as far as water quality go... What's the age on your bulbs?

My two cents:

I've always been a little wary about putting seahorses with most LPS corals because of their nematocysts (stinging cells). Euphyllias such as hammer, anchor, torch, frogspawn, etc have fairly powerful stinging cells, and are capable of injuring the horses.

Another thing, be careful when considering keeping wild caught horses. I've read some research that shows that horses from different regions have various bacteria strains, and if you were to get a horse from one location, then later on purchase another one that was collected in different waters, there is fairly serious potential in one or likely both horses dying from bacterial infections.

This risk is reduced with buying aquacultured specimens, but I wouldn't say it's eliminated. I would highly recommend ORA's Reidi horses. I've had tremendous luck with these guys, and have seen them eat frozen mysis within minutes of being released from their shipping bags.
