Running out of real estate isn't the worst problem to have! It sure looks better than a barren tank at least

Very true! but pesky snails keep knocking my sticks off onto other corals! Most everything I purchased over the last few months from you guys is on a couple of frag racks. Soon they will have more room to grow! :)

  2. Tangs in timeout! Too funny, in a not so funny situation. At least you're in good spirits, I would be in the corner, crying!! :(  Hope to see you and the tank soon, Ty. Oh and even though I lost a couple of frags I picked up from you, random RTN, the bulk are doing excellent and have amazing coloration.  Thanks again!

  3. That was a fun read!! Thank goodness you were rescued from Cleveland and moved back to Texas, lol.  I was a Texan transplant in Chicago and then central Michigan for WAAAY too many years and had very similar experiences as you did when I moved my systems cross country, too funny! We used Penske and the exhaust filter kept clogging, causing us to have to stop and run a cleaning process, ended up losing corals due to those delays, what a headache!! (never again, lol) . I worked quite a bit in Cleveland a few years back as well!

I almost pulled the trigger on that SCA tank. I had a quote from Steve and was about to get it and decided to wait on the 150g and found a Planet Aquarium for sale in Dallas which was 82g rimless, decided to stay a tad smaller for the next year or so until we purchase a house, silly 2-year lease! I'm looking forward to seeing how you like the SCA and maybe I can come see it before I'm ready to jump to 150g!

Great start on the new system!! I need to stop being lazy and start my build thread here as I am currently buying plumbing, misc. stuff and having a stand made.

  4. Nice build! Beautiful sticks and yay for finding Lazarus!  FWIW, I used the micro-bubbling technique for roughly 8 months before moving to Texas.  I feel it does have some positive benefits, but I could never figure out how or why. Corals seemed to get good growth during my experiment and for sure the tank water remained crystal clear, I stopped running carbon and seemed even clearer than when I had carbon online.

I've stopped running it since moving to Texas, but wouldn't be opposed to incorporate it again on my next bigger build.  I used it as recommended by Cruz on R2R, limewood diffuser set near the rapid flow into the pump chamber of my sump, which only allowed the micro bubbles to enter the display, while all other bubbles just went to the surface. The bubble size you ideally want are so small you can barely see them with the naked eye.

I certainly didn't see any adverse effects from running it, but I did have outside air running to my skimmer, which I do not have that luxury now, which is part of the reason I'm not running it anymore. My temps and PH were pretty stable throughout the day and night.

Haha, well it just goes to show the tightness of the reefing community here in Austin! :)

Like Juiceman said, just luck. I will say having almost 90% SPS in your tank is very helpful because even if they nip, it doesn't matter as much because sheer volume if coral helps them spread it out a bit.

I feed my fish a ridiculous amount of food so I don't really believe keeping them well fed does much. Its just behavioral and I don't see them nipping because of hunger, just out of habit and preprogramming. I'm sure it doesn't hurt though.

That makes sense, I guess there is always tradeoffs in the hobby, I tend to love having a clam or two and they never worked with any type of angel, so I guess I need to decide what I want more, LPS and such or angels and SPS!  It's actually a tough call!  Thanks for sharing, Ty!

  6. Yeah, that has been my luck, Juiceman!! I kept a variety of angels back in the 80's & 90's, but of course, I didn't have SPS, clams and tasty little acans and such, haha. I saw Ty's tank and was floored at the luck he has with having that many angels.  It certainly changes the entire tank when you have the beauty of angels in it.  I was just hoping he had some magic sauce he would share with me, lol.

  7. Loved going through your tank swap / move build Ty!  Beautiful corals and fish selection!  I'm sure you have been asked a million times, but how do you acclimate / train your angels to avoid nipping or flat out munching?  Did you get them all very small and keep them isolated until you were sure they would only accept what you feed them? Seems so risky, I've never had luck keeping ANY angels, even pygmy angels! They all wreaked havoc and were eventually sold or traded.

When I get back to a larger system I'm going to pick your brain on this topic!  I'd love to have angels again.

  8. Awesome tank, great recovery from the busted seam, but then to get hit with brooklynella!  BUMMER! Double whammy :(  This hobby can keep us on our toes, to the point that some may have just walked away. It's always so awesome to see reefers that go through major heartaches and frustration stay right in the saddle and never throw in the towel. My hat's off to you, and here's to hoping for a full recovery of the brook!
