  2. LMAR this year will feature a brand-new way that we will be approaching door prizes based on feedback from those who attended the last two events. Rather than drawings every 30 minutes that pull everyone away from the vendor tanks, we will be doing door prizes AT the vendor tanks!

    Here's how it'll work!

First, we will start the day with the first 10 charter members who check in at 10AM. We will be giving these first 10 a free MAAST cooler! Some of the coolers will have goodies in them and two of those will have a gift card that can be used at ANY sponsor booth at LMAR!

Then when the doors open, the hunt begins! Distributed randomly among the vendors will be several golden frags. These frags will look like any other frag in the tank until they are purchased, at which point a golden mark on the underside of the frag plug will let you know that you've won! Prizes will include gift cards and frag packs to the respective vendor! The golden frags may all be sold in the first hour or throughout the event so you're not going to want to be late!

We will also be doing a handful of small door prize care packages scheduled around our raffle schedule!

Please RSVP here if you are able to make the swap! We can't wait to see everyone there!

2:00PM DIY Hands on Algae Scrubbers

Alright everyone, it's almost time for the MAAST September meeting!! We will start the meeting on Sunday the 25th of September at 2PM! Hannah will be leading a class demostrating DIY Algae Scrubbers and everyone who RSVP's (one per household) will be able to make their own and take it home!

Please let us know if you plan to attend so we can insure we have a proper amount of kits! If you do not RSVP, kits will be first come first serve!

  5. For the arc premium membership, I know you have to pay a fee, but Mike would be able to get you more information on that.

For the mast charter membership, it's a $25 fee for the year and it makes you eligible for a raffles at the swaps as well as our Monthly meeting giveaways (must be present to win). We will mail you a card or if your charter close to the event or the day of we will have it waiting for you at admissions or print one for you there.

Also just a heads up on how we do prizes, anyone in attendance can win door prizes at the swaps, but only charter members can win raffles. This year is probably our biggest raffle lineup ever thanks to our event sponsors!

Last year's swaps we gave away MP10s, Vectra M1s, Apex Juniors and many other items. We also do big giveaways at our meetings from time to time for charters also. Last month it was an MP10WES QD, and in June we gave away a go pro and March a Rapid LED Onyx. Definitely tons of other benefits outside of drawings for the Maast charter members like free meetings and awesome hands on meetings so if you're interested in signing up, please PM me!

Can't reveal the full raffle schedule just yet, but let's say the raffle table will be one of your PRIME-ary stops at the event.

  8. Thanks Ty and Kim! I placed an order on Amazon today for a heater and an in tank filter so we'll see how that goes! Also found my old live rock rubble stash!

  9. Background

After upgrading last year to my ADA 60-F, I learned a lot about what I really enjoyed about the aquariums. As my first "shallow reef" I fell in love with the "top down" style tanks and really enjoyed the challenge of working with such a small space. I have decided to take it one step further and enlist MAAST sponsor Zen Reef in helping me try a tank I've always wanted to build, a pico sized tank. Below are some good memories of past tanks as a refresher!

    Equipment

Zen Reef 1 Gallon Custom: 7''x6''x5''

    Aqua Illuminations AI PRIME

    Livestock

    TBD, mostly Zoanthids and Shrooms

    Plans

Unfortunately the one gallon SPS pico I planned last year did not work as well as I would have liked. I rushed the build and ultimately had to call it quits after I had an equipment failure within the first week. This go around, we will be taking it much slower as well as having a much more calculated approach. Sunday at LMAR I picked up an AI Prime from Joey and Coral Cove and lined up a few purchases that I will be picking up in the future with Raven at World Class, Zen Reef, Clayton, and Coral Cove.

One of my buddies offered me a small piece of live rock from his sump so later this week I will be picking this up and also I'll be finding some equipment such as a heater and filter for the aquarium.

I'm not sure how I'll be handling filtration but I do have my eye on an internal filter that I'll be filling with rubble as well as filter floss which will be changed weekly. If this does not work out, I will have a HOB filter and will need to make a light hanger for the prime. Before I get the tank wet, I'm going to buff out all the scratches that it has accumulated from two moves and being stored so this next few weeks will mostly serve as a 'dry run'/ fw run.
