  1. I went in July and dove with Maui Dive Shop. They were great and had some spots that weren't as well known by the masses. I don't know the names of the spots we hit, but I do know that where the majority of the shops took groups was shallow enough to snorkel. I know there's some good spots if you take a boat ride to Molokai. Here's a link to my photo gallery http://gallery.me.com/shanelafferty#100060
  2. That's crazy high. I can get it from glasscages for less than that, I just have to pick it up in Dallas.
  3. Anyone ever used any of the local glass shops? How are they? I think I'm going to build a small glass tank and I'm trying to find a good source. I need someone who can cut the glass and polish the edges, I also wan't starphire glass. I know I can order it online, but I like to support the locals and it's risky shipping glass. Deminsions I'm looking at building are 24x24x16. It shuld be fairly cheap to build. TIA, I'm really itching to get back in the hobby after selling my tank 2 years ago.
  4. Check www.nano-reef.com there's several people there that have them. That's where I was getting most of my info on them.
  5. after looking, emailing, and reading all day today, I think I've decided to go with the Current USA Solana. Do any of you know if any of the LFS have these in stock? I'd like to see one in person that's setup and running. Thanks for the help.
  6. I've been out of the hobby for a while and I'm wanting to dive back in. I was looking at an Aquacube 24, but I think I'll be happier with something a little larger. I really like the rimless cube tanks. I got a quote rom glasscages for a 24x24x16 with overflow, 3 holes drilled, and the 3 viewing panels doen with starphire glass. They quoted me $330 shipped to Dallas and I have to pick it up from there. So who else builds tanks like this? I want to get a couple of more quotes. Also, what would be a good skimmer for a tank this size? I want something quiet and eficient, I also plan to have it moderaely stocked and will keep SPS. Thanks
  7. pond equipment is sold, I still have the generator
  8. So after taking a break from the hobby for the last 3 or 4 months I'm really starting to miss it. Although I'm loving my electricity bill right now. It's down to $120 from $400. Some of you probably remember me, most probably dont. Anyway I'm wanting back in. I really miss the joy and relaxation that my tank brought to my home. My fish were like friends. I had a Dejarsini Sailfin that would swim up into my hand when I stuck it in the tank to clean or feed. So I have sat down and already started the design on a new tank. I will be going smaller, but I feel like it will look better. I'm thinking around 60 gallons, probably 30x30x17. My last tank was 24" deep and I loved the depth, I really think 30" will be killer. Also with the height only being 17" it will be much easier to light the tank as well as clean it. I will have it made with starphire glass on 3 sides for viewing and I want a Calfo style overflow mounted externally. For flow I intend on using 2 Tunze Nano Streams. Lighting will be a single 250W or 400W Halide, SE with a Lumenarc reflector and Ice cap ballast. The light will be at least 18" above the surface of the water, maybe as much as 2 feet. I want the top of the tank open and exposed so I can walk up and easily look down into it. That will also make it easier to clean and reach things in the back. I think that will be needed with 30" of depth. Return pump will be some sort of external pump, probably Iwaki. I haven't decided on a skimmer yet, I want something efficient. Probably a needlewheel style. The tank will be mostly SPS once again. So back to the original questions, who builds custom tanks? I got a quote from glass cages and they wanted $685 with shipping and I would have to pick it up in Dallas. The quote was for the exact tank I described with a black back and 4 holes drilled. That price seems a little steep to me, I'm sure I can find a better price. Thanks and I hope to be back by the end of summer.
  9. I'm getting out of the hobby due to a divorce so everything is up for sale. The tank is 130 gallons and measures 50x25x24. It's custom built out of 1/2" acrylic with euro bracing and an external overflow. It's drilled for a closed loop. It all sits on a custom built stand and canopy. As for equipment here's a list. 10. title says it, looking for a Rose BTA around 4 or 5 inches across. I'm in Round Rock.
  11. IT's an ETSS 750 dual downdraft, the predecessor to the 800. I've had it about 2 years and it works great but I need more. It has a couple of cracks that have been repaired and works flawlessly. It can be used in sump or externally, I used it externally. I also have some brand new bio balls and an auto shut off waste collector to go with it. It stands 23 1/2" tall and the base is 11" x 5". It takes a good pressure rated pump to run it. $120 takes it. I'm in Round Rock, pm me or shoot an email to [email protected]
  12. when I moved to Austin it was a 10 hour drive and I was terrified about moving my tank. Fortunately at the time I only had a 40 gallon tank. What I did was go to the pet stores around town and buy a bunch of the small critter containers. You know the clear plastic containers with the slotted lids on them? I put each fish and coral in one of these and put them all in large rubbermaid containers filled with tank water. They were packed in pretty tight to keep thinks from moving around and injuring everything. I ended up with 2 of the rubbermaid containers in the front of the uhaul with me. I had 1 on the seat and the other on the floorboard. All of my live rock was in the back in a large garbage can filled with water. I also had a power inverter and used it to plug in a couple of small powerheads and heaters to keep water circulating and heated. When I arrived at my new house I let everything out of the containers and in the rubbermaid tubs for about a week with VHOs hanging over them while I cleaned the tank and set everything back up. All worked well. Good luck.
  13. I'm going to try it make it if it's ok. I've gotten a few frags from Clint before and it's been a while since I've seen his tank. I'm glad Austin is getting our own reefclub now.
