  1. I'm pretty sure Manny is somehow to blame!

Once you catch it, document it for posterity!

Well my stuff is doing very well so this hot potato needs to fall into the hands of another. Sam you're up. Jonathan just recently got a ton of frags from him so let's blame Sam.
  2. . . . ummm. . . . people. My SPS have all died over the last few minutes while I caught up on my mentors page here. Seems they had a massive heart attack and all died. Can I have free frags too? I mean if you are all being generous and all. . . .

  3. Sadly I have no par mapping and a meter isn't in the budget right now. Naturally distance makes renting one from an Austin Lfs kind of impractical

I can lend you my par meter for as long as you need
Jonathan, you might consider having him ship it to you and you just pick up the shipping. Would be easier than waiting to drive out there.
  4. I'd personally let it get back down to their comfort range for the alk as long as it's not dropping too fast. I'd also stop any additional dosing, feeding, and get back to the basics before there were issues.

You've kept SPS long enough to know that what you're really seeing now is the delayed effect of the alk spike prior so I'll only mention for others that are reading along.

Another thing not often looked at is the light shock from going from LEDs and predominantly lit 20k tanks to your 10k lighting.

When I ran a 10k frag setup, I'd see similar issues of some frags not acclimating well to the change of spectrum which is why I stopped running 10k in my frag system.

One question, are Sam's frags you just got affected?

He actually went from T5s to MH and not LEDs. He now runs an LED/MH combo.

  5. Good news Jonathan. Always nice to see pictures on your build thread. I feel your confusion about the kalk stirrer and two part. Thinking about your tank has sparked that question over and over in my head a few times. I have been debating lately whether to go the route of a kalk reactor myself. I would prefer a stirrer but only see reactors go for sale on reef central. I'm sure you will figure it out. Your knowledge of the science behind the hobby is sufficient to allow you to grasp anything thrown your way. Hopefully someone will point you in the right direction.

I am glad to hear about your acro devastation coming to a halt. I don't think anyone from ARC has seen your tank (prior transfer) except for me and I must tell you other ARC members that his tank looked spectacular. The health and color of his coral looked amazing. Its hard to argue with the statement that T5s give the best coral color when you see tanks like his prior one was and see they achieve those colors with T5s.

I'm excited to see how well your new coral with color up and see how they will start growing once they get to your tank. You better act quick though, the undata I brought for you is already starting to grow and has taken route down the side of the plug.

About the bulbs, I say run them and watch growth go crazy. After all, we all look forward to having colonies of nice coral in our tanks not just frags and we should be more concerned about the color of the colonies over the frags. So to have your frags look good now vs to have them grow into massive colonies to which later you will focus on the color seems like an easy question to figure out. I just hope you don't damage your ballasts in the process. I'm sure they'll be OK though.

If you keep up these lengthy updates then you will force me to blow the dust off of my build thread and start updating it as well.

All in all it sounds like your tank is in a pretty happy state. Can't wait to see it again after things really start taking off.

  6. But here is a more serious answer:

Than Thain, from Tidal Gardens, has many YouTube videos on coral propagation. He has one where he cuts a toadstool and although it is much smaller than what you have, his method might be of interest to you. He removes the colony from the aquarium and sets it aside in a different container filled with tank water. He will cut the piece and put it back in this same container and let it sit in the container for while in which the toadstool is releasing its toxins. He also adds a few drops of iodine to the container to aid in the healing process. When he feels the toxin releasing phase is over (which I really dont know of a proven way to test when this is actually over) he will put it back into his display. If I remember correctly, he shows a clip of what the coral looks like the next day and it, along with coral around it, look fine. It is a great channel to subscribe to. Maybe someone else will chime in here as well.
