  1. My son will be studying marine biology or ecology at Texas A&M Corpus Christi, and we visited the campus last weekend.  Of course we went searching for marine animals and shells...we came away with a few lightning whelk shells that were empty, until we got home and the next day realized all 3 had hermit crabs in them!   My wife insisted we go buy them a tank immediately, so now we are set up with a 20 gallon long saltwater tank...so I guess my hiatus is over lol!   But I'm definately keeping things small and simple this time.

The tank is fresh so not much to look at right now, but the crabs are happy!

  2. i;m hoping some do walk, so i can split that rock up and spread em out :) but they do look awesome as a carpet like this.

Oh ok! Well just be careful, they can multiply a little fast under certain water parameters, seems like mostly when lots of nutrients are available

  3. Looking good! My clowns loved rolling in them. Just keep an eye on them so they don't walk somewhere you don't want them

Those candy canes should puff up more in a day or so as well, they should fill to the point where there's no spaces between them, if they don't then you might want to adjust their position

  4. My birdnest colony collapsed a few months back, I'm hoping someone might have a frag I can have to get a new one started, hopefully something like a bright pink one. I'll be at the meeting tomorrow, so if a generous soul doesn't mind, that'd be awesome.

I can trade a fuzzy mushroom, some caulerpa or halimeda, or a devils hand leather piece

  5. Being new to SPS, some of my frags have died, some are doing great, then there's this slimer. I've had it for at least 4 months now, and just a couple of weeks ago it started turning white...It's 4 inches long, and half of that is now white. The white area has stopped expanding. At night poylps still come out all the way to the tip of the white half. I know rapid growth can often be white, but I wouldn't expect 2" of white growth out of a 4" coral.

There have been no recent lighting changes.

    Thoughts?

  6. I did something similar after I had two float switch failures... I don't use a reef controller though. I bought a low flow sprinkler timer from Lowes and put adapters on it to go from garden hose threads to 1/4 push connectors. Right now my timer allows water to flow for 5 minutes every 8 hours.

The level stays fairly good, once a month I might have to run it manually for an extra 5 minutes, but that's two buttons.

I usually have to adjust the timing as the weather turns twice a year.
