  1. Does anyone know of anyone who offers tank maint for a fee while you are out of town? (specifically over the holidays) (who is reputable/trustworthy)

Location would be central Austin. I am more than happy to pay a fee to someone who can run by the house once a day.

I apologize if I posted this in the wrong forum.

    I sent you a message.

  2. Day 8 since we added the starter fish and the nitrifying bacteria. Ammonia barely registered two days ago but it is back at 0. Nitrite and Nitrate have yet to show their ugly heads.

Did you go with Dr. tims nitrifying bacteria?

    p.s. looking great so far!

  3. Hey yawl!

I will be starting up my 28g HQI Biocube soon. One big way to save money it seems is to get dead rock(dry rock). With that said I am really getting a lot of different ideas about it.....

I like that with dead rock I wont be getting anything I don't want in my tank like aptasia and even majanos anemones. No need to mention that dead rock is 1/2 or less the price of live rock. Im planing to really take my time with the tank there for letting the dead rock become live over time, correct? Now live rock I know it is coming with a bunch of nitrifying bacteria! But again when the dead rock turns over to live rock then wont it also have a lot of the good bacteria?

Again this seems to be one of those thing that the more I read about it and the more I ask about it the more it becomes unclear what to do!!!

Please help me and give me your suggestion/experiences with this matter!

P.S. Where I stand now Im thinking of small amount of crushed coral for a substrate and mostly dead rock and a few pieces of live rock. Along with one starter fish to get my tank started.

    Thanks so much!

  4. Thanks for the advice! I'm still now sure if I am going to do it or not...the sand my wife brought is really dark and a little to fine.

I'm thinking about doing either dead sand or dead rock.... What do y'all think is more beneficial in starting a reef tank.. Live sand or Live rock? If you had to pick...

    Thanks again!

  5. Hey y'all,

Is a 28g HQI Biocube JBJ..

Now I don't like the HQI in the hood much but the deal came with a MINI ARCTICA titanium chiller and biocube's protein skimmer( How are they?).a nice digital timer and a ocean plus duo..

I got the tank from cragslist. Nice guy... gave me a good deal. 225 bucks....!

He has a much bigger tank...140gallon.. this one was a spare. Now it did sit in a garage for a year. The pumps need new propellers( HELP ME!? where can I find them? ) the old ones got rusted.

I do need some help setting up this tank... Its been a long time from my last reef tank (really ended up FOWLR).

Questions for you! I need any and all suggestions.

    1. This is a long shot... My wife is in Galveston and I got her to get some sand for me. I think you see what i'm getin at...

How crazy is it to get sand from beach? How long will it stay "live" in a bucket? Best way to make it work?

    2. Best place to get live rock?

    3. The only good spot for the tank is in a room with lots of windows...that or my bedroom... How much of a pain is that going to be?

    Thanks y'all!!

P.S. I will get pics up tomorrow...

  6. Thanks, I ended up with eco complete. I'm going to try a planted tank w/o Co2.

I dont have any Co2 in mine... And my plant growth is nuts!

But mine is only a 10 gallon. I don't know if thats makes a difference? I never thought of that before. hahaha

Please keep me updated with how it goes.

    Patrick.

  7. Ahh, my old nemesis duck weed! I have it in my koi pond and love it. I liked it so much that as soon as i started up my 55 planted tank i added a few pieces. A couple of weeks later with the high intensity lighting, CO2 and no Koi to keep them at bay, my tank was starting to get seriously shaded so I decided duckweed didn't fit into my plan for the tank. It doesn't matter how thoroughly I pick them out, a week later I have a healthy new batch spring up! C'est la vie!

You've got a nice tank. Very peaceful. Really like the native fossil too.

    Richard

Hahaha, Yeah some times I hate duck weed. Gets all over my hands! But I find people love to see it!

I fear the day I don't want duckweed! Tell then I guess...

I love koi ponds! How many gallons?

I just added java moss and 2 little Black-spotted Corydoras or Bandit Cory.
