  5. Ok so I think I have a temporary fix until I get a phosphate reactor. I'm not sure the correct terminology for the different sections of my sump, so bear with me if you could. Anyway, I've built a rack for phosphate media and placed it in the section beween the chambers for my refugium and the return pump. The water flows through the refugium and then flows over these "teeth" onto the rack I've built. From there it has to go down to get to the return pump chamber. I thought that of every where in my system this is the one area where the water would be forced through the media. At the moment I have a green wirery sponge like material made for phosphate reduction. Sorry I don't know the name of it, but I think most of you are tracking. My question is if it would be detrimental to my tank to place a stocking full of carbon on this rack as well. What do you guys think?

  6. The "Simple guide to marine aquariums" book I picked up from Petsmart got me up and running. It was an easy and helpful read with lots of pictures(my kind of book). My first tank was a 55 gallon with a Filstar canister filter and a red sea prism protein skimmer( I hate the prisms and would never recommend it by the way). I ran it for four years just fine with fish and some leathers, mushrooms and such. However, if your like most of us, no matter how convinced you are that your just going to dip your toe in the water and get a fish only set up, you are most likely going to end up with corals at some point. That being said, you might as well get the all of the neccesary basic equiptment up front.

  7. These are two pieces of equiptment I'm pondering at the moment. I didn't realize that they are not super expensive, but didn't want to just get the cheapest one at the expense of effectiveness. I usually advise people when it comes to protein skimmers too not go cheap because you will just end up spending the extra cash later to replace the cheap one that doesn't work. Is this typically true with the reactors as well? what brands do you recommend? Thanks for your input.

  8. At least your clowns are trying to get it right by hosting. Mine look to have zero desire to host anything. I've got two anemonies in there that they ignore. At first I just thought they needed a little time, like in my old tank it took like three months for them to host my green bubble tip. I've had a whiteish/ neon green bubble tip in there for over a year and about 4 or 5 months ago I got another bubble tip from river city that has a red base and reddish colors throughout. I'm not sure the exact species of either, but I'm pretty sure they are both bubbletips. Anyway no luck with either of them. They both are shrinking. I've tryed to feed them a variety of food, but they seem to reject everything I offer. In the past I could rely on my clown to do the feeding. I'm not sure what to do.

what is your lighting like and water parameters?

I'm not sure of the wattage on my metal halides(maybe 150), but I have a fixture with two of those and two power compact antinic(?) bulbs that run the length of the 5 foot 140 gallon tank. I'll have to get back to you on the water parameters, but I have no reason to think that they would be out of line. I typically do a 10 gallon water change every sunday. In my old 55 gallon tank I let it go for several months and my bubble tip thrived in there, splitting so that at one point I had 4. One of them disappeared though. Maybe it got sucked up in the pump or something, but I never found any sign of it. Anyway My current tank is definately in better shape than my old one ever was, but my anemonies just aren't doing well.

  10. I used to do mainenance and clean this ladies tank, who just could not figure out why it was always in bad shape and she kept loosing things. In this tank she had a stingray, an eel, a lionfish, and an assortment of other fish and inverts including tangs, clowns, damsels, shrimp, crabs, and multiple anemonies. Someone didn't check the compatability chart, right. Not to mention all of this was crammed into a 55 gallon tank. AWESOME! While I did love a chance to see all of these lovely creatures, it was sad to see them in such poor living conditions. Anyway the point I set out to make was that you were brave to feed that little guy by hand. When I would have to stick my hand in that tank for any reason during cleaning, I never knew what direction a potential "attack" would be coming from. It was very nerve racking. On another note does anyone know the severity of a sting by a lion fish or a stingray for that matter. I'm sure it depends on the species, but generally speaking if I were stung by a lionfish would I have like ten minutes until I was d.e.d. dead or would it burn a little and pass?

  11. Ok so I've been using the improvised trap made out of a 2 liter bottle. It seems to be working great for everyfish but that ******* lemon peel damsel.......Oh god, as I was typing this he finally went to the mouth of the trap and looked as if he would enter, but then quickly retreated back to the rocks. Oh well maybe in another day or so I'll have good news to report.

Wow, I hadn't realized that this site would automatically sensor certain words. Thats pretty cool. I'll reframe from using naughty words such as ******* from now on. Along with **** and **** and who could forget about the imfamous**********-*****-**(my personal favorite).

  12. hey man i'll take him off your hands if you manage to grab him

Timfish called shotgun on it a while back. That is unless you ahve a trade. small frag of zoes or anything I wouldn't expect much for this guy. Not to say it's not a pretty fish, but, well it's a damsel and allot of people don't like them.

  14. I've got a blue berry. It's been stellar and I might even be able to frag it for you. It started as a 1" piece that was found in a friends tank during his tear down. He said it was growing great until he neglected the tank. I took it home and it has grown into 5 fingers about 4" long each. With the success of that one I got this beautiful yellow and orange one with white polyps. That one did great for about 4 months and then quickly receded away. Bummed me out because it had been growing.

I don't do anything special that I know about, so I can't really say "do this not that".

I had an orange one with white polyps as well. It looked just fine(never growing though) for serveral months and then just kind of melted away.

  15. I had a couple in the past with no luck. I've crossed them off my list of keepable stuff. Maybe down the road after I learn a little more about them Ill give it another shot. yours look great, especially the fan.

  16. I caught about 8 damsels out of my tank a few years ago using a fish trap built by Brian at Kingfish. Took a couple of hours of sitting at the tank to catch each fish, but eventually I got them all. Maybe Brian still has the trap around if you give him a call. Trap didn't work when fastened to the brace as intended. I had to stand on stool, hold trap with one hand and suspend to midtank level in the water, and use the other hand to operate the trap door. Obviously, the trap was baited and trapping attempt was at feeding time, so if a fish wanted to eat he had to go in the trap. Took a couple of days before I got the first fish, but then started they got used to the trap and catching them was a breeze.

If this doesn't work for you then you have to drain. A 100 gallon Rubbermaid stock tank should do it, as you only need to drain probably about 70% or so, and 140 isn't actually holding 140. TSC or McCoys has them, and I have always been able to return them and get a refund if the use was short (less than 5 days) and I took the time to clean them out.

What is King a fish? Is that a LFS?

  17. Great looking tank Derek. I like the aquascaping with the smaller rocks out in the sand. I was also distracted by the green wrasse. That thing is awsome looking. What is it and have you noticed any negative to having it?

  18. 60 inch Outer Orbit Fixture, 2x150W Metal Halide HQIs & 2xpower compact by Current. I don't think I'll do any modifications to it so other than the change in the color temp I think I'll leave it alone

  19. Shotgun!? :fish:

There was a thread last week about catching a Dragon goby that had some good suggestions and ideas on trapping it

It's all yours unless someone else jumps in with a trade for it. I'm just not sure how long it will take me to capture him. I live in Killeen. No promises, but I could maybe meet you at river city sometime after I catch him. I'll keep you posted.
