  2. I use one of these: Less than $5.00 in the bargain bin at the local hardware store. You refill it with butane you can buy at any convience store. Go slow, take your time and be careful not to overheat any one spot. It's really easy.
  3. These work very well. Glass only though. It's really easy to use. I don't know if any local carries them. http://www.premiumaquatics.com/Merchant2/m...e=Algaecleaners
  4. I see tangs in the picture. My tangs eat this stuff like candy. I used to have a large growth like you have pictured until I broke off pieces to give away. As soon as I broke off a piece, the tangs went after it. Now everytime I put more back in, they don't eat anything else until they've finished it off.
  5. I haven't had an incident with a bristleworm, but cactus thorns are a way of life here. Duct tape works pretty good for them.
  6. slip or SLP is the smooth joints that you glue together with solvent. FPT is threaded. Female Pipe Thread. True Union means it has the screw together joint with the O-ring seal. The True Union joint can be taken apart and put back together. If you put a check valve in, your going to want to be able to take it out to clean it regularly. Every bit of advice I've seen on plumbing an aquarium says not to use check valves. They are prone to fail, or at least leak because of the buildup in the pipes, and they restrict the flow. I've never used one, so I'm only passing on what I've read. It came from the internet so it must be true
  7. Link to MSDS sheet. http://www.saftlok.com/stl/msds/ib/accelerator.htm
  8. Once....maybe twice. But by the 10th time I surely would have gone somewhere else.
  9. You have to be a registered member to view that page.
  10. I understand that prop pumps must turn the correct way, and it' 50/50 as to which way it starts when power is applied. I have the MJ mods and it's pretty brutal sounding when they try to start the wrong way. But impeller pumps, at least the ones I've seen for aquarium use, run correctly regardless of which direction the impeller turns. I do know that on some larger pumps the impeller is designed to turn a certain direction, trash pumps for example. I've always assumed it was the start up torgue that eventually separated the impeller from the shaft as it's just plastic pressed onto a smooth metal shaft. BUILT CHEAP!
  11. I'd love to have some, but I won't be in Austin until the frag swap. If you can keep a piece until then, put my name on one and I'll get it then. If not, don't worry about.
  12. What is the problem with most pumps that they can't be used on a wavemaker? Does something wear out, break, overheat? I'm not sure what the difference is in my turning it on and off using them for water changes and stuff, and a wavemaker turning it on and off making waves.
  13. You can 'install' an RO unit to the end of a garden hose, check this out: http://www.purelyh2o.com/product.php?produ...=255&page=1 I think most off of the suppliers sell this option. And, I don't think you can use the Hydor's on a wavemaker cycle. The only cheap pumps that you can pulse are the maxijets.
  14. Gabriel, How do you have your filter sock mounted in the sump, and how do you clean it?

  16. www.berghia.net And local too, well kind of. A sponser on the 'other' board. I don't have any experience with them, but have only heard good things about them and aptasia. I would imagine some of my fish would enjoy them also. Great snacks!
  17. Balancing overflows really isn't a problem. I have my dursos set at about the same height (eyeballed) and they both flow water. If one flows a little faster than the other, I would never be able to tell. You could even use one drain with a valve to feed your fuge low flow and other drain to your sump. The main thing to keep in mind is that each overflow must be able to drain at least as much as your return pump can deliver to your tank. That way if something were to ever go wrong with one drain, your not flooding. Like Headless suggested, you should build the extra width and out to the 24" now. It's really convenient. You will really like having the edge around your tank to set things on. Food, glue and epoxy, test kits, the TV remote and just about anything else that collects where there's room. If there's one thing I would do different if I built another stand it would be to build a bigger edge around the tank. Mine's only about 2 1/2 inches.
  18. The 'View posts since last visit' link always returns posts back to Fri Jan 05, 2007 4:06 pm for me. I've tried logging out and back in again, in both Opera and Explorer with the same results. I use this feature daily.
  19. If you have a Harlequin Shrimp, that could be a problem. The bristle worm is just eating dead tissue.
  20. Your top off needs to be installed in the same part of your sump that your return pump is in. As the water evaporates, that's where the water level will change. I have mine connected directly to my RO/DI unit using float switches and solenoid valves from here: http://autotopoff.com/index.html There's a lot of ways to set up an auto top off. You can make it really simple and cheap to really complex and expensive. You just have to read up on the different ways to decide what you want to do. Whatever you do, think real hard about what could go wrong with your setup and cause a flood. For water changes, I guess you could take the water from wherever you want. I take mine from my sump as it works out to about 15% of my overall volume. I just pull the plug on my retun pump, drain the sump and put fresh water back in, then pluig the return pump back in.
  21. When you look at manifolds, be sure to consider all the loss in head pressure with all the bends and elbows. And figure in head pressure for the distance your lifting water also.
  22. Mine usually only come out at night, and sometimes when I feed the tanks. They usually disappear almost instantly if they detect light or movement. I've read that a six-line wrasse will also hunt them down. Be careful handling them, they are also known as fire worms. If one of the spines gets in the skin, it burns like fire. Been there, done that.
  23. I've always understood them to be good, unless the numbers get out of hand or one gets way too big. They are detrivores. Arrow crabs will hunt and eat them.
  24. To use the expansion socket, you need an extra wall plug. It plugs into the wall, and also into one of the plugs on the controller. you still only have 8 channels, but with the expansion socket you can plug two things into the one channel. And since it's a relay separate from the controllers power, you can plug some higher powered items into it.
  25. I got some of those. I ordered them from someone claiming to be in Freeport, TX, but then when the package came it was shipped from North Carolina. Afterwards, I got this from Ebay: Unfortunately, eBay removed this auction-style listing because it's against the law, eBay policy, or both. All bids or offers on this listing have been canceled. We advise you to not purchase this item. It's a lesson learned now. STICK WITH THE SPONSER'S!!
