  1. Trimmed the Chaeto in my fuge about 3 months ago. Literally cut it in half, and it is overgrown again. :) I'll be trimming it out again this Saturday if anyone wants any. I won't be available until after 12:00, but whoever wants it can come and get it then. I'm still at work, so I'll check any PMs or posts when I get home. Chaeto will be first come first serve basis.

  2. Been following this thread because I just ordered a CuC of my own through Reef Cleaners. For what it's worth, John was awesome. Shipping was delayed and he was right on the spot with emails letting me know what was happening and why things were the way they were. My snails arrived alive and well and are munching away on my algae outbreak. I got the 90g quick crew which was supposed to come with 85 dwarf ceriths, 29 nassrius, 27 ceriths, and 34 nerites. A rough count that I did looked like I had approximately 100 dwarf ceriths, 35 nassirius, and at least 40 nerites. Also, shipping is free on the quick crews. I'll definitely be using Reef Cleaners again!

  3. Is your fuge getting direct light?

    When we had a HOB, it only received the light we put over the tank, which clearly wasn't enough. It didn't kill the chaeto, but it definitely didn't grow. When we upgraded to the 90 and got a regular sump, we just stuck a regular old 100W incadescent light over it right on the chaeto, and it grows like crazy now.

  4. Oh, to answer the question about the live rock. We had between 100-125lbs. in our 55 gallon. I've always heard, the more you can fit in, the better. It adds spaces for your bacteria to cultivate, provides shelter for the livestock, and, most importantly, places to mount your frags :D

  5. Hey Eric, first of all, welcome aboard!

    I used to have that exact same tank before we upgraded to the 90g we have now. I'll try to answer a few of your questions based on my own experiences with it.

    Bio-balls ~ I would forego the bioballs. When we had them in our tank, they didn't do much of anything. They didn't seem to harm our tank, but I think the space could be used for something more beneficial. I would look for some small pieces of porous rock and throw them into that compartment. I think you'd get better filtratiton that way.

    Lighting ~ We had 2 clamp on metal halide lights that I believe were 150W each. I could be mistaken on the wattage though. I do know that we got excellent growth on everything in the tank, but honestly, the colors always seemed washed out. I like our current setup of our T5HO's. You could always add actinics to the 55gallon, but we always found it hard to find space for more stuff.

  6. I'm seeing similar results to Crab Rangoon. When I first got the skunk cleaner he molted about 2-3 times a month. He's been in the tank for a little less than a year and I see him molt on average once a month. It will all depend how young they are, how fast they are growing and the Iodine as well as Calcium concentrations in the tank.

  7. My Nitrates peek at about 10 before a water change, I cant get them to Zero.

    I had a tough time getting the nitrates to 0 as well until I through some cheato in the sump. That stuff has been growing like crazy and haven't seen nitrates since. :cool:

  8. Depending on how long the livestock will be kept in barrels, you may want to put an air stone in to get some oxygen into the water, and maybe a small powerhead to keep the flow moving as well. If you have a skimmer running on the barrels, it should be fine though.

    I upgraded from a 75 to a 90 and had to transfer all my stuff to a few tubs for about 4-5 hours while the new one was being set up. It went easier than I thought it would. Also, I have a 50gal rubbermaid tub you are welcome to use. It is just storing my salt and tank equipment at the moment, so a quick rinse and it should be good to go. Let me know :)

  9. Hey John, my roommate and I have a full 5gallon bucket of sand from when we moved tanks that we decided not to put in the new tank. It was in our old tank, but has been in the bucket for about 2 weeks now, so not sure if it's still "live" or not. You are welcome to it. We just ask for a 5gallon bucket to replace the one that has the sand in it :)

  10. hey douwant2ply,

    I teach high school physics and chemistry.

    Looks to be a heat transfer question. The formula you would want to use is

    m1*cp1*dT1 = m2*cp2*dT2

    m1 = mass of the iron ball

    cp1 = specific heat capacity of the iron

    dT1 = change in temperature of the iron (initial temp - final temp)

    m2 = mass of water

    cp2 = specific heat capacity of water (4.186 J/g*C)

    dT2 = change in temp of water (final temp - initial temp)

    *note that the change in temp has to be positive for both the iron and water*

    because the iron and water will reach temperature equilibrium, they will have the same final temperature. I'll use T for that variable.

    Your equation then, should look like:

    (100 * 0.473)(125-T) = (200 * 4.186)(T-25)

    multiply it out and you should get

    5912.5 - 47.3T = 837.2T - 20930

    add like terms and get

    26842.5 = 884.5T

    solve for T:

    T = 30.34 degrees Celsius
