April Debuysere
So I started over and I added atm colony to help cycle. Well ammonia is down and nitrates present but never saw nitrites? Anyone know what happened? Is is ok to put my fish in now or what do I do? It’s been 3.5 weeks
+Dogfish
I dont have any experience with ATM bacteria. If you do not have nitrites a good test is; add ammonia until you have a level of 2ppm then test 24 hours later. If ammonia is 0 and no nitrites are present then your tank is ready for livestock. How big a tank and how many fish is the next question. If you add too many, too fast, you will get more ammonia than the tank can process.
April Debuysere
32 g tank I have two clowns a large one and a small one. The rock I bought had some hermit crabs will they be ok if I add ammonia? Or do I need to fish them out and put in the little tank with my fish? +Dogfish
If you have livestock in the tank do not add ammonia.
Timfish
From your posts it sounds like you added some live rock that had hermits on it. Between adding bacteria and using live rock I wouldn't expect any nitrites to show up for long even if it was ever at detectable levels. For what it's worth I haven't had a nitrite test kit for 15 years or more.
