Could our reefs be saved after all? Weed-like cauliflower coral has evolved unique immunity genes

Recommended Posts

Fascinating Pocillopora damicornis' genome is so unique.    A coral's innate immunity to bacteria is certainly a deciding a factor in it's response to changing environmental conditions.  Research like Wright's paper presented at C4 2016 and Bock's paper show significant differences in the immune response between genotypes within a species.   Understanding which genes provide inhanced immunity and looking for those genes in other species/genotypes would go a long way to selecting and growing corals for restoring reefs.

Agree. Also would be key to understand which mutations in its genotype are markers for the stress response that causes expelling zooxanthellae. Would be important to isolate the conditions and factors that trigger it across species.
