Popular Post Vernon Saunders
Hi all, I know I have been silent for the past few months. I had moved to Florida, and after a short delay of getting situated I picked up this beautiful thing. I am currently In the process of getting it set up and ready to go and decided to make a build thread on here as part of my return to the forum. So far I have got the RODI system set up, the overflow holes in the stand drilled and started painting the back of the tank black.

+Jimbo662
WOW...look at all the real estate in that tank!
+Dogfish
Looks good. I guess its kinda unfortunate you being so close to the live rock, plant and coral suppliers. :-)
Bluemoon
Welcome back! Can’t wait to see it full! Your first tester coral could be some wild collected zoas. Money key would be worth the trip! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Vernon Saunders
Can't wait to start getting things in the tank. Going to be great.
Vernon Saunders
I finished painting the back black and decided to cut square holes instead... though since apparently I couldn't find the jigsaw I used a hole saw and sandpaper to do it. Vernon Saunders
Ok so with the help of the club I got the tank off my table and onto the stand. On that note I have a small issue and could use some advice on how to fix it. It seems that the tank is very slightly off level.... not sure if I should shim it or if there is a better option to do to get this thing level. What do y'all think? jolt
I would shim it for sure. I use the composite shims from Home depot
Sierra Bravo
Hey! Welcome back. For me, 180g + near WWC = going broke Also agree with shimming the stand. Now's the time; you can't do it later. After you get the corners where you want them, make sure you shim down the length until you can't fit a shim so you maintain support all the way across the stand. Vernon Saunders
I am in need of some help, if someone is able to video chat with me who has any knowledge of shimming a tank it would be appreciated. I have shimed things before but the tank seems to be a different beast
Sierra Bravo
I can't video chat but you are welcome to call me at work. I'll send you my number in a PM.
Vernon Saunders
Per a recommendation of one of the Reef Club members that is here in Orlando... I am putting some water in the tank to make it settle a little bit into the carpet. I'm going to put about 4-5 inches of water (35-40 gal).
Vernon Saunders
Thanks to the advice I recieved and the help from one of the reef club members around here, we got the tank just about as level as humanly possible. I know its probably hard to tell but that is 5 different points on the tank.

Vernon Saunders
Was our thoughts on it too... I will add that a 180gallon tank with about 40-45 gallons of water in it is heavy cause (though some trial and error) a couple of times had to lift the whole system to pull the shims out and start over. Even with the weight the carpet and foam was causing some issues and had to stack some shims to level the tank.... two guesses who was the one picking up the heavy beast and who pulled the shims out. 1
Vernon Saunders
Got a tester frag in my QT tank along with a yellow tail chromis who didn't want his picture taken
Vernon Saunders
Ok so update on the build so far and QT. Both the frag and the fish are still alive and doing great. I got sand (carabsea special grade) and the most salt (Redsea blue bucket) I have ever purchased at one time.
Vernon Saunders
Been a while since I got an update in the tank so here it is. I got the tank plumbed and started the cycle. I am using a RS-300 sump and a 20G long for a refugium. 20181029_210928.mp4
Vernon Saunders
I got 2 icecap 3k gyre pumps and placed them on opposite sides of the tank and got them working to create random chaotic flow. I will say I am very please with the lack of noise and the amount of water they are pushing around. Also pleased to report that my QT tank has kept a small birds nest colony and this gorgeous frag alive. The second pic is of the birds nest while I was playing with the polyplabs coral view lens for smartphones.
