Monti changing from green to purple

Recommended Posts

I have had 2 monti's for about 3 months now. Thanks to Juiceman and they are growing. The red looks pretty normal and is still red. The green one has turned purple from the middle to about 1/2 inch near the edges. It is getting really thick with all the new growth. It has prob gotten 3 times thicker than when I got it. Looks like the Napali coast of Hawaii. This is all new growth. Any idea why the change in color? Kessil lights. Cal 435. Mag 1420. Alk 8.9.

Usually a color shift from green to purple is from an increase in light intensity.  But it could also be a shift in spectrum with an increase in the ratio of blue and UV parts of the spectrum compared to what it was growing under.  This example is an excellent example demonstrating the length of time it takes for a coral to shift it's photobiology and why people need to be patient and not constantly shuffle corals around.
