+Todd Council
This summer I made a Port Aransas tank and stocked it with macro algae and peppermint shrimp that I caught at the jetty. This guy also found his way to Austin. The pictures really don't do the reds justice. So do any of you know what kind of shrimp this is? The tank did OK for a couple of months but the algae mostly melted away. I also have a stone crab the size of a quarter. He seldom comes out of the rockwork. When he does, I'll shoot a picture. +Todd Council
Once I got a picture, I was able to do a little research and answer my own question. it is Lysmata hochi. I found an old MAAST thread from 2009 where they were trying to identify these guys. Turns out it was identified by Gary from AquaDome. https://academic.oup.com/jcb/article/28/1/148/2548334 Now the big question . . . are they reef tank safe? Timfish
Well, I was going to guess Lysmata pederseni. I would say it doesn't have any more risk than peppermint shrimp which it's closely realated to. Lysmata has a bunch of shrimp that are cleaners like the the various skunks shrimps and fire shrimp so it's possible you might see some cleaning behavior.
