Had a clown disappear/die today out of nowhere. Poor other clown is all out of sorts and won't swim in their usual spot.

2 months QT and almost 3 in the DT. No sign of the body, death goo, all the snails and crabs hanging in one spot.

An hour after seeing the lone clown for the 1st time, my new dog (of about 3mo) bolted and ran off (not typical at all). Searched on foot, then in my truck, app up and down the road (highly traveled road on the backside of my house, w/ no shoulder and blind turns), when I get a call from Austin Pets Alive. Dog had been picked up by a nice lady and taken to Austin Pets Alive. While I'm thankful of her effort, I'm unsure why she wouldn't call the phone number sewn into his collar. Hard to complain too much when my pup was returned with no injury, but still...

hmmm...Didn't know red legged hermits were snail murderers until last night.... Picked up 8 Mexican Turbos to help w/ algae yesterday. Within an hour, I noticed my red legged hermit assaulting one, so I plucked him off and deposited him as far away as possible. Little bugger is determined - and quick! Every 20 or 30 min I would check again and sure enough he was either on a snail or on his way to one. Banned to the fuge for the New Year!

If you can deal w/ the "dust" the shrimp kicks up, then I highly recommend picking them up. The shrimp NEVER. STOPS. WORKING. and it's mesmerizing to watch. The dust isn't so much an issue after a while (once he's kicked it all up, it's mostly "gone"), but the 1st couple of months I'd look over at the tank and be all WTF? why is my tank cloudy?

In reading Madsalt's build thread, the topic turned to RODI filter replacement, that reminded me that I hadn't replaced any of mine since going live w/ it just over a year ago.  In replacing the DI resin today, it seems like my new resin is already a little used up.  Shouldn't it be 100% blue?  Seems like quite a bit of brown in there.   Thoughts?

The old resin - should I have let this go for a while longer?  Til it's all brown?

I thought the same when I got my RO/DI the other day.  The resin was brown mixed with blue.  Here is what it looks like after making about 150 gallons or so and my TDS is zero.  So I think you are good to go.  If you have had your resin in the canister for a year I would change it.

A TDS meter is invaluable for knowing if its time to change your resin or not. Its hard to base it on color alone, especially if you don't even use the color changing resin.

FWIW, my resin runs out about every 7-9 months. Prefilters should be changed every 6 months and membrance every 3-5 years roughly.

The question is:  Is the new resin a bad batch?  Shouldn't it be 100% blue?  Should I be complaining to BRS and asking for a replacement?

I guess it depends on the resin. Most color changing ones half the resin is blue but I seem to remember the non-color changing ones being all uniform in color like your example.

If you had a TDS meter, you could tell if the new stuff is exhausted already by the TDS reading.

Was this a sealed bag? If not, your DI could have been spent already due to CO2 intrusion.

It's color changing.  http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/brs-4-stage-value-replacement-filter-kit.html

1.25 lb. Color Changing DI Resin Refill

TDS = 0

I wouldn't expect it to be completely bad, but was curious about the brown pellets, especially since it was a vacuum sealed package.  Sounds like that's normal.

Thanks!
