Winterwater
I have had this filter for a couple if months but it was used since January by the previous owner. What compartments do I replace. It's an ro/di filter has four stages that run through it. I am fairly new to the more technical side of feeding. I use th filter for a 16 gallon Nuvo and a 28 gallon nano cube. Also due to water quality, my clown may of obtained rich,I don't have a hospital tank, is there an easyway to treat it. A bucket maybe?
Timfish
Ammonia is removed by the DI resin, it's not removed by the RO membrane (ammonia is taken up by corals to feed their zooxanthellae Ich is a separate problem). Do you have any inverts? If not you can do hyposalinity otherwise your options are a UV sterilizer or remove all fish for 11 weeks.
jestep
What are you testing ammonia with? Just asking because pretty much all of the API ammonia tests I have ever used will register .25 - .5 on water with zero ammonia. If that's the case, you may want to have someone with a more accurate test kit get a reading.
Timfish
Ooops! Forgot the link to research on ammonia uptake by corals: http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/umrsmas/bullmar/1979/00000029/00000004/art00011 Have you tested the output of the RO membrane and compared it to the output of the DI resin? I guess while I'm posting links here's a good paper on "Ich": http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/fa164 And here's two articles comparing different test kits: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2012/6/chemistry http://dfwmas.org/files/TestKitAnalysis.pdf
Sascha D.
Is the ammonia reading on the water coming from the water filter or from the tank? Almost every tank has Ich in it. Healthy fish keep it at bay. An Ich outbreak in a tank could be cause by rapid temperature fluctuation, bad nutrition or bad water quality. If you have an outbreak of Ich and high level of ammonia in your tank, then the it is very likely a different problem than the filter.
Winterwater
The ich is a food source issue. I just was trying to kill two birds with one post. I am new to filters so I only tested ammonia after it exported through the filter. Reading .25. I am wanting ammonia at zero, I have a heavy accumulation of brown algae on the sand. I will post a pic if I have one.I just want to know how to get the filter in fighting conditions again.
